Author's purpose
Shiloh is an award-winning children's book written by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. This book is the first in a series of four stories about a young boy named Marty and an abused dog named Shiloh. The main character, Marty Preston, lives in the hills of Friendly, West Virginia. He finds an abused beagle dog that belongs to his mean neighbor, Judd Travers. Marty decides to go against the local custom of not getting involved in other people's business. He secretly takes the dog, names him Shiloh, and goes to great lengths to keep his secret safe. Shiloh is an adventure story about growing up and examines the difficult feelings of an 11-year-old boy. This novel tells the story of something every child can relate to: the special bond between animals and humans.
